تقول إحدى الحكايات الشعبية الفلسطينية أنه عاشت في يوم من الأيام فتاة كان جمالها مشعًا لدرجة أن جميع الرجال، صغارًا وكبارًا، وقعوا في حبها. أحبها أحد الشباب أكثر من الآخرين، وتوسل إلى والده ليطلب يدها للزواج. ولكن عندما رأى الأب الفتاة لم يستطع مقاومة جمالها وطلب منها الزواج منه بدلاً من ابنه. لقد دمر الابن بالحزن. في صباح اليوم التالي، بينما كان الصبي ووالده يسيران في غابة القرية، اقتربا من شجرة كبيرة قديمة. تظاهر الصبي بسماع أصوات قادمة من الشجرة. وعندما وضع والده أذنه على جذع الشجرة ليسمع، أخذ الصبي حجرًا وضربه به على رأسه. وسال دم الأب على جذع الشجرة. ومنذ ذلك الوقت سميت شجرة القطلب أو قاتل أبيه (قاتل أبيه).

تحتوي الشجرة على جذع أحمر جميل جدًا وفواكه لذيذة صالحة للأكل تنضج في كانون اول، وهي دائمة الخضرة. جميلة جدًا عند استعمالها كنقطة محورية في المناظر الطبيعية. مهم للنحل لانه ينتج عسل جيد جداً، وذلك لسخاء رحيقه وأزهاره المقلوبة التي لا تتأثر بالمطر الذي يغسل الرحيق.

According to a Palestinian folk tale, there once lived a girl whose beauty was so radiant that all men, young and old fell in love with her. One young man loved her more than all of the others, and he begged his father to ask for her hand in marriage. But when the father saw the girl, he could not resist her beauty and asked her to marry him instead. The son was devastated with sorrow. The next morning, as the boy and his father walked in the village woodland, they came close to a large, old tree. The boy pretended to hear voices coming from the tree. When his father put his ear to the trunk to listen, the boy took a rock and hit him on the head with it. The father’s blood spilled onto the trunk of the tree. Ever since then, the ‘Qatlab tree, or ‘Qatel Abih’ (his father’s killer),

The tree has a very nice red trunk and tasty edible fruits that ripe in December, evergreen. Very nice when planed as a focal point in a landscape. Very good for honey bees, because of its nectar generosity and the inverted flowers that are not affected by rain washing the nectar.
