هي شجيرة دائمة الخضرة يصل ارتفاعها إلى 1-5 أمتار. السيقان لها لحاء محمر وفروع شابة، وأوراق الشجر مستديرة ومضغوطة بأوراق متناوبة، جلدية، خضراء لامعة، خضراء مصفرة من الأسفل. تمتد فترة التزهير من شباط الى ايار. الثمار  حمراء بنية. للفواكه خصائص طبية ويمكن استخدامها بحذر كملين. تنمو في ظروف بين الشمس والظلّ. يستخدم بشكل شائع في برامج إعادة التشجير في منطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط، نظرًا لإثماره وقدرته على البقاء في البيئات الجافة. يمكن استخدامها كمصدات للرياح أيضًا.

Rhamnus alaternus is a evergreen shrub 1–5 m high. The stems have reddish bark and pubescent young branches, rounded and compact foliage with alternating leaves, leathery, shiny green, yellowish-green underneath. Flowering period extends from February to April. Fruits are red-brownish drupes. Fruits have medicinal properties and can be used with caution as a laxative. Needs full to partial fun. Used as in xeriscaping, or a hedge, screen. Rhamnus alaternus is commonly used in reforestation programs in the Mediterranean, due to its fruitfulness and ability to survive in xeric environments. Can be used as a windbreak also.
